Nellie A. Thornton Middle & High School

The project consists of an addition to and renovations of the existing Thornton Middle & High School, which will remain occupied and functioning during construction. Additions consist of a new (exterior enclosed) stair tower, gymnasium office extension and service elevator. Interior alterations are comprehensive and include modernization of a significant auditorium, the 20th-century Joseph S. Wood theater known more commonly as "The Wood". The 1,500-seat theater has a decorated history hosting performances including Marion Anderson, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in its 84 years.
